|Simple lives and simple living

The sympathetic characters are proponents for simple living. I chapter 3 Mrs Dashwood believes that 7K pounds would be enough for her to live comfortably. This is not realistic according to Elinor, but the sentiment of believing that a large fortune is not necessary to a happy life is there. Elinor is careful with her spending to make sure that they live within their means. Edward wants a private life in a the country as opposed to being distinguished.
Compare this to Fanny Dashwood and Mrs Ferrars. Fanny wants to keep all their money for themselves, and thinks that they may not be able to live on that when discussing supporting the Dashwoods - indicating that their material needs are great. Both women wish Edward to be distinguished.
