He could have left them more than the sum of a thousand pounds each :-).

But I'm sure he envisaged Henry Dashwood surviving long enough as life tennant to save enough money from the income of the estate to enable him to make decent provision for the Dashwood ladies.

That was the flaw in the plan: allied with the fact that John Dashwood's original generous impluse( made after giving his father a deathbed promise) was so easily swayed by his awful and rapacious wife.
