Are you new?

As Tina points out, Edward's first words in the novel, whether my direct or indirect discourse, are "Devonshire! Are you indeed going there?"

I wouldn't expect him to declare himself in love with anyone by this early point in the novel, but to give him one speech in the first eight or more chapters, when he is introduced as a character and a love interest, in chapter 3, is not, in my humble opinion, the mark of a mature novelist.
