Because the Dashwoods were highly respected.

Maybe his secret , if he had one, was a lost love.

I don't think Uncle Dashwood was too strict about the thoughts on keeping the inheritance through sons.

Otherwise why didn't he think of it in the first place, when he intended bequeathing it to Mr. Henry Dashwood?

To me this explains why he didn't think of marrying for the sake of having a son.
