A reasonable answer...   Written by BarbaraB (9/16/2006 1:20 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Protecting Norland, penned by Maisy
Are you new?

I can definitely see what you and Barbara are saying about the uncle's right to protect Norland and your post does help to justify the uncle's actions. Henry himself certainy seemed to understand and held no grudge so I have to assume that JA's current readers understood too. Also, Mr. Dashwood had to have considered that what happened was a possiblity. It's just his disappointment when the will was read indicates to me that since nothing was said that he had held out hope that more would be done on behalf of his 'penniless' family even if ultimately the bulk of the inheritance went to John's son. However, as I said, you do make a good point. Thanks for your help.
