...it seems likely he values Fanny's decisiveness because he doesn't possess that quality himself. IMO she convinced him of what he really wanted to do all along -- not give up any of the money. She gives him several reasons to think that he's doing the right thing ("But you have such a generous spirit!"), thus letting him off the hook. Now he can do what he wanted to do and also feel no guilt for it.
