Partly his wife's fault?   Written by Kim E (9/16/2006 8:40 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, On Mrs Dashwood and John's relationship., penned by Mandy N
Are you new?

John is described as "rather cold hearted", although not ill-disposed. It is suggested that he would have turned out to be a better man if he had married "a more amiable woman". I think this has some bearing on his relationship with his step-mother. Mrs Dashwood is, as Mandy observes, very warm hearted, and if not for her dislike of Fanny coupled with the fact that Fanny leads John (and directs his mind) to some degree, I believe they could have had a much closer relationship. It's more Fanny who divides them.

What I'm trying to say is that I think the had the potential for a deeper relationship, but John's marrying Fanny put an end to that.
