My thoughts on the title   Written by Geri-Lynn (9/16/2006 7:52 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Some thoughts on the title, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

] One thing I really wanted to try to get away from in this read is the whole oversimplified notion that Elinor=sense and Marianne=sensibility as well as the idea that the two qualities are somehow mutually exclusive.

Believe it or not, that particular notion never quite struck me - perhaps because it is, as you say, "oversimplified." I've always looked at the title as being representative of a balance and/or harmony of these two qualities being always present in all of us, and how we must learn to master both in order to be ( Oh, I don't quite know how to put this) "whole." That we have these two qualities within us that are constantly competing against and complementing one another. The harmony of our lives depends on being aware of both and allowing ourselves to be vulnerable to them and yet, also the master of them. Everything in its time... everything in its place.

I do like your thoughts on "responsible sensibility." Very profound, indeed.

This is just another reason why I love Jane Austen so much. She never wasted a word. There are so many levels to her writing. Honestly, it never ceases to amaze me. Every sentence promises newer and richer discoveries! :-)
