So, what is your final verdict of the play? I will confess that I had never seen or read it before, though I knew of the character of Mrs Malaprop. I enjoyed The Rivals quite a bit.
Some final questions for you all:
1. Who is your favorite character?
Mine is Mrs Malaprop. She had me in stitches throughout the play. Second to her would be Bob Acres, who likewise, made me laugh, and whom I found very endearing.
2. What was your favorite scene?
This is tough, there are so many. I love the exchange between Acres and Jack where Bob is exhorting him to tell Beverley what a "devil of a fellow" he is. And also Mrs Malaprop expounding on the proper education for girls - "I would have her study geometry so that she may know the contagious countries." Hysterical.
3. What didn't you like?
I can't think of anything I out and out disliked. I do think the Sir Lucius character was a bit vague and undeveloped. A result of the rewriting, I'm sure. Sheridan probably cut out too much of him.
4. Favorite line?
"He is the very pineapple of politeness!" ;-)
