Did anyone wind up purchasing this DVD? I enjoyed it very much. The actors were all universally good, though the actress who played Julia had an odd style about her that bothered me. She was always leaning forward and practically lurched when she walked. Very off-putting. Even so, she was a good actress, played Julia with confusion and hurt and then great anger when she found he was lying about having to flee the country. Faulkland was played for laughs and got them. I liked him better on stage than on the page.
Acres was a hoot, and was quite a treat dressed as a macaroni with his valour leaking away.
I adored Mrs Malaprop, lots of fun. As was Sir Anthony raging at his son. Sir Lucius was a bit more of a cipher, but so he is in the play when compared to the others.
Jack and Lydia were fine, I liked Jack most when he was "giving in" to his father's wishes and volunteering to marry the aunt or the girl with the hump and one eye, whichever. And his scene reading Beverley's letter with Mrs Malaprop is terrific.
There were some lines that aren't in the online version of the play that I read. I assume they were in the original? The line I remember most was one of Mrs Malaprop's (of course!) who, when all arrived to stop the duel, said how glad she was to see them "all horizontal on their legs."
If you haven't seen the play, I hope you can lay your hands on a copy. While it's fun to read, it is, after all, a play and is meant to be seen.
