it was necessary to have a moral angle in plays etc. and Julia's understanding and forgiveness were meant to be that.

Maybe the success of their marriage depends on it ;-)
Faulkland looking for assurance - hurting Julia - later regretting and repenting - Julia forgiving - the cycle repeats.

Perhaps the two will miss it if it were to change ;-)
