. . . his plan would backfire - how could it not? Did he really think Lydia would just meekly go along with everything once the truth came out?

As others have said - Lydia felt betrayed, and justifiably so. Jack's little game of assumed identity was bound to have repercussions. Yet, he couldn't be himself either, because of Lydia's romantic sensibilities. It does seem a no-win situation for these two.
