What a Nutter   Written by Tanya Virginia (3/5/2007 7:41 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Rather Wearing, penned by BarbaraB
Are you new?

It's funny that the stage directions for Faulkland in Act III Sc. 2 describe him perfectly:

"perversely, discovering a new cause for grief, determined to fix a wrong meaning even on this candid statement of her devotion, with almost psychopathic persistence in examining the motive, alone and somewhat bewildered by the effect of his "reasonable" discourse, smugly perverse, with a smile of semi-lunatic superiority"

What he does get by acting this way is constant reassurance from Julia, and he laps it up. Also, possibly, he gets an adrenaline rush rollercoastering from one sentiment to the next. It seems like he doesn't feel truly in love unless he's suffering, not unlike Lydia.
