...that Mrs. M does not come up with this whopper out of the clear blue sky, but she is actually responding subliminally to Sir Anthony's overblown arboreal metaphor:

"Thus, like garden-trees, they seldom show fruit, till time has robbed them of the more specious blossom. Few, like Mrs Malaprop and the orange-tree, are rich in both at once!"

And even Sir Anthony has been infected with malapropitis, as "specious" is his mangling of "special"!
