Beverley's letter   Written by Cheryl (3/5/2007 12:07 a.m.)
Are you new?

How funny is this scene, with Jack having to read aloud to Mrs Malaprop Beverley's intercepted letter to Lydia? I read it with a huge grin on my face. He sucks up to her in person -

"...my principal inducement in this affair at present is the honour of being allied to Mrs. Malaprop; of whose intellectual accomplishments, elegant manners, and unaffected learning, no tongue is silent."

- while he abuses her in the letter -

"As for the old weather-beaten she-dragon who guards you...I am told that the same ridiculous vanity, which makes her dress up her coarse features, and deck her dull chat with hard words which she don’t understand..."

Oh, he is a bold one! And then he fulfills his promise in the letter -

"to see you shortly with the old harridan’s consent, and even to make her a go-between in our interview."

- which he does manage to do. So he's got disguises within disguises. He is playing a very deep game here, and it is going to blow up in his face at any moment. Oh, he has got a comeuppance coming - I can't wait. ;-)
