...on the "hit list" of the "book police". Those two novels were very famous, and from the parts of them that I have read (they are both really long!), they can at times be pretty randy. But that did not stop JA from being familiar with them.

As I recall, some of the action in Humphry Clinker actually takes place in Bath, as in The Rivals, and that makes me wonder whether there are significant plotlines in each of those named novels which are echoed in The Rivals.
