..of the scene, and would take it one step further, and observe that this fits (like a good wig?) with the theme of disguise that Cheryl suggested in another thread--toupees today are about one sort of disguise, i.e., to disguise a man's age, but in Sheridan's time, wigs were, as you point out, oblique statements as to the social class to which a man belonged.
