I wonder whether it is the convention of the drama as existed then, or the depiction of reality, but servants definitely take much of the audience's attention and their masters' confidence. (Compare to JA novels: there is nothing but the most fleeting mention of servants.) And they make interesting characters, too! Here is Fag, cutting a figure in Bath and deploring the unfashionably early hours and using flowering language (I liked his description of Lydia's riches :) ). And the pick of them all is Lucy. Her account book must be thick indeed!
