been unbearable and no wonder people had fans. I wonder if performances were called off if it was too hot, say in the height of summer?

In winter it would have been welcome gaiety, all that chatter and light on the dark evenings. Stumbling around in the dark once the lanterns went out would have been intriguing indeed!
