LoL! I think it would be fun to experience theater in this way at least once as it is so different from the darkened theater experience I am used to. I am sure it would be overpowering in some ways—heat, loudness and what I might consider distractions come to mind. The idea that people felt less restricted in their conservation and movement because it was bright makes sense to me if it was not considered rude (and it seems not) and the references to P&P and NA are delightful but especially NA as it gives a little added humph to Catherine’s concern at Henry’s unnatural silence. The amount of candles used must have been stunning and I shudder too at the thought of what could (and did on occasion happen to theaters) but it is most neglectful of the powers that be that after the audience spends the evening practically swamped in the light a multitude of candles that they must then stumble about in the dark, a completely different safety hazard afterwards. As always, so very enlightening JulieW; I am greatly enjoying you posts. Thanks! ;D
