were the theatre owners. Usually they combined ownership and mangement. They held the Letters Patent which allowed them to operate the theatre legallly.

There is a lot more information on this "monopoly" in the theatre topic, Diane:-)

The Manager/owner of Covent Garden at the time Sheriden was writing The Rivals was Thomas Harris. He was sole properitor from 1749-1803, when he then continued in partnership with the actor John Kemble,until his death in 1817.

And of course, Sheriden himself became the owner /manager of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. More on that later;-)
