My goodness!   Written by Cheryl (2/26/2007 11:34 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Background to the play, penned by JulieW
Are you new?

Salacious details, indeed! ;-) This reads like a soap opera.

A couple of things that struck me -

"I can no longer think he deserves the Treatment of a Gentleman, and therefore shall trouble myself no further about him than, in this public Method, to post him a L***, and a treacherous S********."

I assume that is "liar" and "scoundrel"? How interesting that they didn't spell out the words. I understand why they don't guve full names, but words? Is it because it could then be considered libel and therefore actionable in court?

And what a nasty piece of work that Matthews was! When Sheridan was down on the ground to pick up a broken bit of sword and stab him several times with it. Blackguard! And this was the man who rounded up the group of hecklers for the opening night performance. Do you know whatever happened to him? Did he die alone and miserable or at the end of someone else's sword? ;-)
