] Swift put him in the way of Church promotion, but he lost it by choosing as a text, “Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof,” on the anniversary of the succession of the House of Hanover.

Quick House of Hanover synopsis:

After Queen Anne died without an heir in 1714, a distant family connection was found to the German noble in the House of Hanover. He was brought over to England and made King George I. Both he and his son George II were roundly despised and they hated being in England as well - in fact, George III, who was on the throne when Jane Austen was born (and who lost the English colonies in America ;-), was the first Hanoverian king that spoke English. But they were deemed preferable to James Stuart, who had a closer blood tie to Queen Anne, but who was Catholic and so could not be king. This all led to the Jacobite Rebellion, Bonnie Prince Charlie, and all that.

But I imagine in Sheridan's grandfather's time that feelings were still running very high and it sounds as if he had strong Jacobite leanings. ;-)
