Elizabeth's "gift"   Written by CarrieB (4/7/2004 2:10 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Questions for Carrie Bebris:Bingley's fortune, penned by Vania
Are you new?

]Will we see more of Mrs. Darcy's powerful 'gift' in the future?

Yes. Don't worry – she's not about to channel spirits or anything like that! I intend to keep this element very low-key, more intuition than anything else. I think that what we might call "second sight" is really just our subconscious making connections between things we've observed/learned but not put together consciously, or our brains processing information so rapidly that we have the result before we realize we've input the information. (You see a stranger on the street and sense that he's dangerous without having to separately analyze his appearance, body language, actions, words, etc., to form a deduction.) I've also heard that one explanation of "women's intuition" is that, physically, women often have more connectors between the right and left sides of their brains than do men, which facilitates making connections between what on the surface might seem to be unrelated things.

Recall Elizabeth's comment to Darcy about taking the trouble to practice. In that conversation, she's talking about musical and social skills, but I think the analogy can be extended. As I've said before, Elizabeth is an intelligent woman who engages with her surroundings and thinks critically. She is also more open-minded than some of the other characters. (She is willing to rethink her previous assumptions, for example.) I don't believe it's too much of a stretch to think her brain might process some of her observations without her even realizing it, and add that information to other things she's already learned (for instance, from her mistaken first impressions of Darcy and Wickham) -- thus making her a little more perceptive than someone whose brain doesn't enjoy as much exercise.
