My impression is that though Caroline is altered--through mind-control or voodoo or whatever it is--she is still the same old Caroline inside. Maybe whatever is controling her--ir that is indeed the case--only works when other people are present. Thus, when she is alone she seeks the relief of speaking her mind and letting all her "Carolineness" reign free.

Then again, maybe she's just completely off her rocker as everyone suspects.
