Here's what I think is going on...

I am still speculating, and have been angelically good in not peeking into Ch 21 and beyond, but I'll continue to confine my speculation to the chapters Linda wants us to discuss. I think that the exhibit at the British Museum has not been mentioned by coincidence. I think that Professor Randolph and his watch (which is right in the centre of the dust jacket illustration!) are perhaps hypnotising and/or brainwashing first Miss Kendall and now Caroline. I think that could explain a lot of what is going on, including Caroline wandering around in a bad part of town on her wedding night and Miss Kendall's involvement with the horse accident. In Ch. 4, Elizabeth wonders about "a quieter kind of magic, the power that fuels intution and enables one to take leaps of faith to places reason cannot go." I think that's a hint--that, plus Elizabeth's willingness to "acknowledge the possibility that there are elements of this world beyond mankind's ability to comprehend them." I'm not sure why Randolph would be doing this--and also unsure whether he and Parrish are in it together for some reason, or whether he is hypnotizing Parrish too. He hopes that Parrish will finance his next archaeological dig. Maybe they need Miss Bingley's fortune for that or maybe Parrish is being influenced by Randolph to keep the money coming.
