I agree with you, Michele, that Caroline does seem to be hypnotized here. So I did a Google search and found that Mesmer--thought by many to be a pioneer in hypnosis--died in 1815. He had been studying and inducing trance-like states for some years at that point. With this in mind, I think it's safe to say that hypnosis isn't ruled out as a possibility, though it wasn't understood or recognized by many people at that time and was not yet even known by that name.
At this point in the novel, I think Caroline is being influenced by someone else using hypnosis. She is most definitely not herself.
