] It actually seems unlikely to me that the Darcys would have changed their travel plans in order to attend Caroline's wedding.

While no love is lost between Mrs Darcy and Caroline, I think the writer gave us the plausible angle that Bingley being Darcy's friend, and Bingely's wife Lizzy's sister, they were doubly obliged to attend. Even though they really did not want to.
