] What was the purpose of this visit? How does it affect the plot.

This seems a bit out of character for our Elizabeth (and also Mr Darcy), but totally in character for a detective. :-) It reminds me of the Tuppence & Tommy mysteries written by Agatha Christie.

I definitely agree with Mary Frances that it puts "Miss Kendall on her guard about the Darcys."
