Could it be??? Written by Kim in AK (3/21/2004 7:19 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Caroline's marrying an American, penned by Anne Charlotte

I too am astonished that CB would lower herself to association with an untitled American. Perhaps her totally unsuccessful pursuit of Darcy has caused her to realize that she isn't such a hot commodity? Perhaps she sees that she doesn't seem to "have what it takes" to entice a man from the desired echelon of society?

I don't know...I try not to think about it or it kind of ruins some of the enjoyment of the story. It just doesn't seem to me that wealth only would be enough to impress Caroline, especially since we are explicitly told that Americans are not exactly held in the highest esteem. I think we're supposed to believe that they are genuinely in love, but Caroline doesn't seem the type of woman to be swept off her feet...this scenario really paints her as rather a fortune hunter, when I see her as a prestige hunter.

I'm definitely caught up in the mystery, however--I just try not to analyze Caroline's motivations too closely, as it makes me crazy and distracts me.

It actually seems unlikely to me that the Darcys would have changed their travel plans in order to attend Caroline's wedding. But...whatever.
