] I don't even trust Lizzy's interpretation of the estate's name, as it comes from so dubious a source.

Joyau means 'jewel' in French, and they were taking it for Joyeux. I'm sure this must mean something, but I can't think what that could be yet.

] And with Caroline's fortune being half the sum of Miss Kendall's, it doesn't make sense that he'd choose the former if money were his only object.

People think that's what Miss Kendall's fortune is. My suspicion is that Mr. Parrish cried off because he discovered something about the Kendall family finances.
