Caroline's marrying an American

At first I was as astonished as Karrie. I agree with her that Caroline is too snobbish to consider an American as an eligible husband. I don't know much about this chapter of history but I think that Americans were not very popular in Britain then because of the war of independence etc and were regarded as savages in general. And Caroline is someone who certainly agrees to such prejudices. Therefore I was quite taken aback about their engagement at first but your explanation that she was simply desperate to marry any rich man is very plausible for me. Yet, what surprises me even more is that he actually decided to marry her !!!
