I don't know enough about the history and use of the stiff upper lip to answer that, but it seems to me that that is one of several possible motives. I just thought those two specific issues -- not imposing unwelcome feelings and making it easy for Lizzy to say no -- were important points about the second proposal, and an indication of how much Darcy had changed.

I agree, as I implied, that there are different interpretations about how sensibly a man violently in love might express himself. I can even imagine JA smiling over that phrase and what her readers might make of it.
