This is very well put...   Written by Lila (6/20/2007 11:39 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, JA plotting carefully?, penned by Tracy W
Are you new?

But isn't the whole story about fate? Fate that Bingley should come to Netherfield with Darcy, and that he would take a liking to Jane, whose sister believes it a duty to go to her in Netherfield when she is ill. Plus, all of the things you mention are fate too.

It was fate that Darcy met Elizabeth, and all events in the book were instrumental in directing them toward their destiny. Was Jane Austen a believer in fate?

If any one of the events went a different way, perhaps the story would not end as we know it today. This reminds me of a very interesting movie I saw (for another board) called Sliding Doors. It's about how different things can turn out depending on the turn of events, coincidences, and the choices one makes.
