I think it   Written by Helen B (6/20/2007 4:24 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Getting engaged..., penned by BrendaB

was more distress at her mother's total lack of subtly in getting everyone out of Jane and Bingley's way that distressed both Jane and Lizzy, not the prospect of Bingley proposing.

Jane wanted to marry Bingley, she loved him, but she's a discrete young lady and was horrified at her mother's blatant attempts to throw them together. Lizzy felt the same sense of shame, but she was also aware (which no one else in the family was) that it was partly the bad behaviour of her family that had led Darcy, Miss Bingley and Mrs Hurst to think Jane an unsuitable bride. Lizzy was worried history would repeat itself and Jane would be hurt again.
