you will find a thread that evolves into a partial answer to your first question here. Look under "Former friends" posted by Robbin, then "Mr Darcy as..." posted by Susan L, then "Is it definite..." posted by Helen B, then to "The advertisement in the newspaper..." posted by Graciela. There is some interesting information and good answers in a couple of the postings around there, about your first question.

In reference to London newspapers being read in other districts, I expect that yes, they would be, but with early 19th century transporation being what it was, it was at least several days behind the actual news. I think that Mrs. B is just blaming her brother to save face. She and Lydia pretty much push me over the edge in these chapters...!
