I remember reading somewhere that during the 19th century, an engagement or marriage was hardly considered official until the announcement had appeared in the Morning Post (a newspaper). Putting the announcement in the newspaper was another step in making Lydia's marriage socially acceptable (since it was also a sign of her family's acceptance), while being vague about the date helped give readers the impression that she had been married all along.
