To say that a marriage 'would scarcely seem valid' without a bunch of new clothes is quite funny. It does seem from these comments that it would have been quite common for a woman of Lydia's social and economic standing to get some new clothes upon marriage, but surely new clothes cannot make a marriage better, stronger, more respectable.
As for wedding dresses, I remember some comments at Pemberley that even a well off woman typically did not buy a special dress that she wore only for her wedding. A new dress, yes. But it would be one that she would use at other formal occasions. Perhaps someone can correct me?
