Mr. Gardiner's red herring   Written by Adrian (6/14/2007 12:25 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Former friends… (long), penned by Robbin
Are you new?

IMO the term "former friends" is a phrase Uncle Gardiner uses to cover up who is actually supplying the assistance of which he speaks, and I expect Mr. Bennet takes it as such and perpetuates the "legal fiction" with his family. Mr. B assumes it means Mr. Gardiner; Lizzy eventually comes to see it as Mr. Darcy.

Although Mr. Darcy may have drawn on further connections to help secure the commission (and make sure it was as far away from everyone as possible), the phrase "former friends" has the advantage over "a former friend" of making it less likely that anyone will try to narrow it down to a specific name.
