...his attitude was not completely out of the mainstream. The fate of Maria Bertram in MP did not draw objection from Edmund, a considerably more empathetic and intelligent clergyman than Mr. Collins [happy to discuss on the MP or Austentations board], and I feel safe to say that in JA's England there were many who would consider Mr. Collins's remedy the correct one if the family had the self-discipline to carry it out. Doubtless there were also more understanding souls in JA's time as well.
