Hackney-coach   Written by Christopher (6/10/2007 9:11 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Ch.47: Another transportation question, penned by Line
Are you new?

A hackney coach is very similar to a taxi for use around town. Therefore the implication is that they were not going beyond town.

In the second letter from Jane, she is told Colonel F. came into Hertfordshire , anxiously renewing them [his enquiries] at all the turnpikes, and at the inns in Barnet and Hartfield, but without any success.

Barnet and Hartfield are north of London and are logical places to stop to eat, change horses, etc.

Elizabeth hasn't thought of the possibility that Wickham may have rented the hackney coach just to throw people off his trail. But the rental of the hackney coach, along with the fact that they were not seen north of London, on the way to Gretna Green, is still persuasive.
