I also thought the "lines" meant inferences of meaning. Since Kitty was not surprised about Lydia's running off with Wickham, I thought Lydia had communicated the information to her. For example, maybe "shopping" meant "walking in the park with Wickham." I think sisters can have a code of what they really mean. Just my humble opinion...
