I am quite happy to agree with you when it comes to criticising Darcy's behaviour on this point. He certainly gives every impression of being thoroughly incompetent at understanding how Elizabeth may view matters, and we have JA's own statement that he continually gives offense (chpt 4).

Darcy comes across as a social incompetent, and unlike Mr Collins it's not due to mental disability but to his arrogance, ... conceit, and ... selfish disdain of the feelings of others. (chpt 34).

He just appears to have made something like an attempt at courting. That he got it wrong is rather unsurprising.
