I think he is deep/complex and shy...   Written by Lila (6/6/2007 11:21 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Or is Darcy 'deep'?, penned by William D
Are you new?

That in combination with the way he was raised gives the appearance of arrogance. All this discussion about Darcy's change makes me wonder what exactly about Darcy is changing.. His character will not change I hope, because haughty as he is, I like him. He is proud, haughty and very compassionate. Just look at how generous he is with his sister. But I do believe it is his demeanor (e.g. how presents himself to the world) that is changing.

I think Darcy describes his shyness at the piano at Hunsford. And Elizabeth's advice to practice is just a way of saying you can overcome your shyness. I do a lot of public speaking for my work. When I gave my first presentation I thought I was going to die. Practice took away some of my anxiety and shyness (not all).

Darcy is also very complex (intelligent). Just listen to his tete te with Elizabeth and Bingley when they are in Netherfield. Also, I love it early on when he says to Sir Lucas, "any savage can dance". Now, only Darcy can say something like that! I totally agree. Darcy is a very complex man.
