that pre-proposal's Darcy's feelings for Lizzy bordered more on lust than love, because, IMHO, there can be no love without respect. He admired her, was passionately attracted to her, but did not care enough about her (nor for many other people)- it was all about him at that point.

I agree with you that Elizabeth's refusal forces him to evaluate his emotions and reevaluate her.
