On second proposals   Written by Line (6/4/2007 11:38 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Elizabeths "power" over Darcy, penned by Michaela

Despite Mr. Collins' worldly wisdom, I think it was quite rare for a man to propose a second time, especially after being turned down as thoroughly as Elizabeth refused Darcy! Also, it's hard for an adaptation to show the suspicions that remain in a character's own mind. What I noticed during this group read is that Elizabeth not only sees Mr. Collins' proposal to herself coming, but afterwards she also suspects that he has switched his "affections" to Charlotte before he proposes to *her*. Not to go into Austenuations territory, but in "Emma", Emma also suspects that Mr. Elton is planning to propose to her before he actually does. None of these suspicions comes through in any of the adaptations, IMO.
