I do not think it is necessarily so.

I think Darcy is inferring the sentiment from Elizabeth’s charge against him, and repeating back to her.

There is no doubt that Wickham was a popular, and almost certainly with am eye to the main chance, he always made sure of old Mr. Darcy’s approval. I doubt that old Mr. Darcy favored him above his own son.
