More goodness...   Written by Moni (6/1/2007 7:52 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Chapter 40 – Jane’s goodness, penned by Cathy Allen
Are you new?

CH. 39:

"And Mary King is safe!" added Elizabeth; "safe from a connexion imprudent as to fortune."

"She is a great fool for going away, if she liked him." (Lydia)

***"But I hope there is no strong attachment on either side," said Jane.***

"I am sure there is not on his. I will answer for it, he never cared three straws about her -- who could about such a nasty little freckled thing?" (Lydia)

From my reading of this Jane is being democratic, hoping the two, Wickham and Mary King, had not suffered from being parted. The thoughts of the other girls contrast to show her comment more fully. It is kind of refreshing, she just has this "even", democratic kind of way of seeing things!
