do not "read" subtle, non-verbal signals very well. In Darcy's case, he misreads both Jane's quieter regard for Bingley as "indifference", and then Elizabeth's verbal jousting as interest in himself. I've had people tell me a woman I just conversed with was "definitely interested" in me. How do they know that? I usually don't have a clue.... %-} ..
