as I recall references in early nineteenth century writings to improved (ie. cultivated) land, as opposed to wilderness or forest.


I don't think "understanding" is the same as IQ. I think Mr. Collins could do quite well on an IQ test--he has the ability to memorize, work patterns & count. What he lacks is insight & a sense of what is truly important. He lacks the ability to relate meaningfully with people.
